  • Beskrivelse: The new president takes over during the general strike. The effects of the strike are seen and felt in the streets, in public transportation, in harbours and roads. President Urho Kekkonen took up office on 1 March 1956. On the same day, a general strike and delivery strike of agricultural products were launched. Cinemas were closed, but some newsreels were made during the three-week strike. They were shown after the strike, including this historic Finlandia Newsreel 289. J.K. Paasikivi hands over the presidential duties to Urho Kekkonen, who announces that he will pursue President Paasikivi’s policies and take up the presidential duties with humility. The newsreel ends with the tunes of Sibelius’ Finlandia.
